At Sports Turf Solutions, we celebrate those whose dedication shapes the turf industry. Mira Yusoff’s journey is a testament to her resilience and passion, especially as a woman excelling in a field often dominated by men. Her story captures the spirit of perseverance, offering a source of inspiration for emerging turfgrass professionals worldwide. Here, in her own words, Mira shares the journey that has taken her from her roots in Malaysia to renowned golf courses around the world:

“Growing up in an agricultural environment, I developed a natural bond with the land and a deep appreciation for the finer details of plant care. My passion for turfgrass management truly ignited during my first year studying horticultural science at the University Putra Malaysia (UPM) in Serdang. It was there that I discovered how something trivial can be vital in a different setting.

In my final year, I focused my research on turfgrass, delving into its needs and how it thrives in different environments. I then embarked on an internship at Impian Golf and Country Club, where I was able to apply everything I had learned. My dedication and hard work quickly earned me the role of Assistant Golf Course Superintendent in training, a position that allowed me to merge my academic foundation with real-world challenges.

My journey took another significant turn when I was offered a job at Bukit Jalil National Stadium. Here, I expanded my expertise beyond horticulture, taking on the responsibility of managing the pitch, landscaping, cleaning, sports facilities staff, and contractors. Working with event organizers for major concerts and sporting events introduced unique challenges but also valuable lessons in managing complex situations and balancing the needs of various stakeholders. As a sports turf manager, I was assigned to care for the grass, but when it came to navigating the politics, it hindered my ability to do my job the way it should be done.

Realizing that I had reached a point where I needed to push myself further, I sought advice from Nigel Taylor. He introduced me to the Ohio International Intern Program run by Mike O’Keefe who has nurtured many turfgrass managers over the years. I shared with Nigel my desire to move beyond my role at the National Stadium, seeking a place where I could achieve even more.

Through this program, I had the opportunity to refine my skills and grow professionally. I was sent to Robert Trent Jones Golf Club, where I had the privilege of learning under Scott Furlong. Entering the program with minimal hard skills, I was met with immense patience and guidance. One of the most surreal experiences was participating in the Solheim Cup in September 2024. I had the chance to witness the preparation, work on the course during the event, and restore the grass afterward. Meeting so many turfgrass experts and witnessing the U.S. team win on their home soil, where we cared for the grass, was truly special. I was also sent to Lancaster Country Club in June to prepare for the 79th U.S. Women’s Open, where I mowed the greens—a priceless learning experience.

Currently, I’m interning at the Los Angeles Country Club, one of the top private golf courses in the United States, ranking second in property value and within the top 10 in the country. Being here is pushing me to surpass my accomplishments at Robert Trent Jones and preparing me for my ultimate goal: to return to Malaysia not only as a leading female professional but also as one of the best in the field.

Having this experience has made me realize the limitless potential in the turf grass world, as long as you demonstrate dedication and passion. Although it took all my courage, a small girl with a big heart from Malaysia, I made the journey across the horizon to learn from the best in the industry. I doubted whether I could survive and adapt, but the people here have been incredibly kind and supportive. The experience I’ve gained has been nothing short of incredible—beyond anything words can describe.

Sports Turf Solutions, particularly under Nigel Taylor, have been great motivators, helping me push harder and supporting my journey here. They believe in my potential, even though some people back home have doubted my capabilities, saying that as a female, I wasn’t good enough or didn’t have enough experience. I believe everyone starts from zero, and what makes me better is that I use those doubts as fuel to grow stronger. Those doubts are just reflections of others’ limitations, not mine. I’m young and have many years ahead to prepare for my great launch, and this is only the beginning.”
